Question about the Holy Spirit

Frequently Asked QuestionsQuestion about the Holy Spirit

Some Christians deny that Syed Ahmed Al-Hasan (pbuh) is the Comforter, because the Comforter can only be Spirit and not human.

How to respond to this?

Question about the Holy Spirit

The following is taken from the Almahdyoon.com website

Other literature is being translated into Arabic which we will refer to once it has been made available.

Syed Ahmed Al-Hasan (pbuh) is the Comforter

Glad tidings have come about the First Mahdi, Executor and Messenger from Imam Mahdi (pbuh): they have come in the New Testament, in various places, giving glad tidings from Jesus (pbut) about the Comforter.

In John 14:

26 As for the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, which the Father will send in my name, he will teach you everything, and he will remind you about everything that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave to you. My peace I give to you. I do not give you, as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be disturbed, nor fearful.

28 You heard me say to you: I will go, then come to you. If you loved me you will be happy because I said ‘I will go to my Lord’, because my Father is greater than I.

29 And I said to you now, before it happens, until when will you believe.

30 I will not talk much with you, because the leader of this world will come and he has nothing in me.

31 But so that the world understand, that I love the Father, and as the Father has bequeathed to me, so shall I act. Stand up, let us go from here

In John 15:

26 And when the Comforter comes, who I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth, who issues forth from the Father, he will bear witness to me

27 And you shall also bear witness, because you are with me from the beginning

In John 16:

5 And as for now, I am going to the One Who sent me and none from among you can ask me “Where are you going?”

6 But because I said this to you, grief has filled your hearts.

7 But I say the truth to you: it is better for you that I go, because if I do not go, the Comforter will not come to you, but if I go I will send him to you.

8 And when that one comes, he will chastise the world about sin, piety and religion.

9 As for sin, it is because they do not believe in me.

10 As for piety it is because I am going to my Father and you will also not see me.

11 And as for religion, it is because the leader of this world has been condemned.

12 I have many matters that you still cannot bear now.

13 As for when that one comes, the spirit of truth, he will guide you to all Truth, because he does not talk from himself, but he will speak all that he hears and he will tell you about forthcoming matters

The problem that is proposed

Christians say that what is meant here is the ‘Holy Spirit’. There is no issue with us saying he is a holy spirit in the sense he is a person filled with the Holy Spirit like Jesus the Messiah was filled with the Holy Spirit.

However, they say it is a spirit and not a body, and that it descends on the believers:

Bishop Athanasius says in his commentary on the Gospel of John: “The Paraclete, is himself God’s Holy Spirit, the Comforter. The Paraclete is the Comforter in ‘The Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name.’ (John 14/26). And he is the one that descended on him on the 50th day (as in Acts 2: 1-4) so they were filled with it and went forth to give glad tidings, and it is with the Church and in the believers, and it is a gift that is connected with faith and support [1]

Responding to this question

Regarding the point that it (Spirit) could never mean a human:

Response:

“(1) My loved ones, do not put your faith in every spirit, but put the spirits to the test, to see if they are from God: because a great number of false prophets have gone out into the world. (2) By this you may know the Spirit of God: every spirit which says that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God: (3)And every spirit which does not say that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not from God.” (John 4:1-2)

The early Christians understood from the Gospel of John, regarding the narration of the Comforter, that it was glad tidings of a human entity, since in the 2nd century (187AD) Montinius claimed that he was the forthcoming Comforter. Similarly, in the 7th Century, Mani imitated the Messiah, choosing 12 disciples and 70 clergymen whom he sent to the lands of the East. Undoubtedly, this indicates the Comforter” was understood to be a human entity and that they were awaiting him.

Jesus’ statement: “Spirit of Truth, whom the world is not ready to receive” is the same statement which has been narrated for the awaited Messiah, “The stone which the stone masons rejected became the cornerstone”, indicating that the Comforter is the Awaited Messiah.

We get an indication of the Holy Spirit’s human nature because it is of the same category as the Messiah – and the Messiah was human: “And I seek from the Father that that He give you another Comforter” (John 14:15-31). The Comforter who is Jesus (pbuh) and another Comforter, meaning of the same category, i.e. a human presence. The Greek text uses the word ‘allon‘ to indicate another from the same category, since the word ‘hetenos‘ is used to indicate another category, that is different by definition.

It is clear from the texts that the forthcoming Comforter may face rejection, and just from this point, we understand why Jesus left instructions to believe in him and to follow him**: “If you love me then remember my requests” and he said: “And I have said to you now, before it happens, until such time that you believe” and “I have spoken to you about this, so that you do not stumble”

“But I have said this to you, until the hour comes, you will remember that I said it to you. I did not say it to you from the beginning because I was with you.”

According to Christians, the Holy Spirit, is one side of the Trinity, and, as per their belief, it is only expected for the students (of Jesus) to be believers in it, so that it descend on them. Hence, why would they ever disbelieve in it?

(Translator’s note: in other words, why would Jesus insist that people should believe in the Holy Spirit after he has departed if it was spirit, unless, it was in fact a human who could be subject to rejection?)

Some narrations indicate the Comforter is superior to Jesus (pbuh): “But I say the Truth to you: it is better for you that I depart, because if I don’t then the Comforter will not come to you, but if I depart, I will send him to you”.

It is clear that his statement ‘better for you, indicates the superiority of the Comforter, and this does not work except if we derive the meaning of another person from the Comforter. Other than this possibility, there are two other possibilities:

Firstly, the comforter is the Holy Spirit, as the Christians imagine, i.e. with him being the Third Person (in the Trinity) and the (Three) Persons being equal in their view, with none of them being superior to the others.

Secondly, that He (Comforter) is a creation from the non-human creations of Allah: in this case, it is not possible for his presence to be better for them than that of Jesus (pbuh) among them, since, in his role, he is supported by the Holy Spirit, similarly, in this scenario, the presence of Jesus does not contradict that of the Holy Spirit, such that he has to depart in order to send it.
