The Syed (as) observes a diet in which he abstains from all meat and animal products, during the month that leads up to Dhil Hijjah, as well as observing the well known fasts during the first 9 days of Dhil’ Hijjah.

The benefit is spiritual cleansing, ascension and bodily improvements.

Further details are given below, along with original Arabic:

Qays Alansari:

Peace be to you and Allah’s Mercy and His Blessings, God keep you, oh Riser from the Family of Muhammad (pbut)

My master, is there a fast for the soul in which mankind abstains from eating anything that comes from a creature with a spirit, like meat and fish…is this (the fast of the soul) desirable or a tradition from Muhammad’s Household – pbut???)

Ahmed Alhasan:

Personally I abstain from eating animals and their products for the duration of Dhul Qa’dah and the first 9 days from Dhul Hijjah, then I also – in addition to this fasting – observe the regular known fasts for the first 9 days of Dhul Hijjah, however, this is not obligatory, but beneficial to for the human spirit and for his ascension and bodily health
