The following answer taken from the official site and also referenced in Various Jurisprudence answers indicates that engineering or fields in which logic and calculus are used are preferred, though there is not clear prohibition from following other disciplines.

All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds,
and may blessings be upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad — the Imams and the Mahdis — and may peace be upon them.

Proper upbringing is a duty that both parents must fulfill. When it comes to playing, watching television, or even accessing the internet and computer games and the like, parents must monitor their children and prevent them from engaging in corrupting activities. For example, if a child goes online to play, this should be done under the supervision of their parents. However, it is not permissible to completely forbid them from playing or enjoying their childhood, for this will negatively affect them as they grow up.

Moreover, some games are educational, and the child can be guided and encouraged to play beneficial ones — such as design games or geometric puzzle-solving games (الألغاز الهندسية – lit. ‘engineering puzzles’), for instance. Many children have a natural talent for these, and such activities can greatly enhance their intellectual abilities. Likewise, for teenagers, games can serve as a means to distract them from thinking about harmful matters.

Parents can also teach their child or teenager how to research and learn, thereby developing their skills. For example, parents can assign them to research specific topics — scientific, historical, or related to daily life. As for religious matters, do not burden the child beyond what is suitable — such as joining his parents in congregational prayer. Gradually, encourage him to pray two rak‘ahs on his own and ask Allah to fulfill a specific need. If he then sees that his request is answered, his bond with Allah will grow stronger and faith will gradually become rooted in his heart.

Remind them of Allah in everything. When they argue, say to one of them, for example: “Forgive your brother or sister, and Allah will make you like the prophets (peace be upon them).” In this way, you nurture good morals within them and at the same time instill in them the desire for perfection.

If one of them does something good — such as praying two rak‘ahs or performing an act of obedience — praise him and say kind words: “Allah will bless you, grant you goodness, and mention you before His angels.” You can also create a daily routine for them — for example, an hour or half an hour to memorize short chapters of the Qur’an, by reading aloud and letting them repeat after you. Day by day, they will memorize the surahs.

For children above ten years old, try to organize their week — for instance, three or four days during which playing is not allowed. Even if they are permitted to use the internet or engage in activities other than their studies, let it be for learning — researching scientific or historical topics, reading books, or stories about the Prophets and Imams (peace be upon them), and similar subjects. By giving attention to them and organizing their time, good results will follow. But through neglect, they may go astray — and you may lose them, and that loss would be great.

Unfortunately, many Arab parents living abroad wrong their children by neglecting to teach them the Arabic language — reading and writing — even though they could dedicate just one hour a day to this. Their children need Arabic to read and understand their religion in detail. I do not think this is difficult nowadays, when all books and educational materials are available online and can be easily accessed.
